Chennai International Airport
Overview
Chennai's main gateway sits at Meenambakkam, about 7 km from the city centre — one of the closest metro airports to its downtown in India. It handles both domestic and international traffic for South India.
Terminals
Domestic and international terminals sit next to each other, and a large new integrated Terminal 2 opened in 2023 to add capacity. Most full-service and low-cost carriers operate here — always confirm your terminal on your ticket.
Lounges
Travel Club lounges serve both domestic and international departures, alongside airline lounges such as the Air India Maharaja Lounge. Priority Pass is accepted at several.
Getting to the city
Chennai Metro connects directly to the airport and reaches Egmore/Central in ~30 minutes — the fastest way to beat traffic. Prepaid taxis and app cabs take 30–45 minutes to the centre.
Insider tip
Take the metro from the airport to skip Chennai's notorious road traffic into the city.
