Do Indians Need a Visa for Thailand in 2026?
Indian passport holders enjoy visa-free tourist entry to Thailand for up to 60 days. Here's exactly what to carry and when a visa is still needed.
The short answer
Good news for Indian travellers: you do not need a visa in advance to visit Thailand for tourism. Since late 2023, Thailand has granted Indian passport holders visa-exempt entry, and this arrangement has been made a permanent part of Thailand's entry policy. In practice, this means you can fly to Bangkok, Phuket or Krabi and get your entry stamp on arrival, without the paperwork and waiting that a traditional visa involves.
This visa exemption is specifically for tourism and short visits. It is one of the biggest reasons Thailand has become a favourite first international trip for Indian families, honeymooners and groups of friends. Below, we break down what the exemption covers, what to carry, and the situations where you would still need to apply for a proper visa.
What 'visa exemption' actually means
A visa exemption is different from a visa on arrival. With visa on arrival, you queue up, fill a form and pay a fee at the airport counter. With a visa exemption, Indian citizens are simply permitted to enter for tourism and receive a stamp allowing a set number of days, currently up to 60 days per visit, at no visa cost.
Immigration officers still have the final say at the border. They may ask to see your onward or return ticket, proof that you can support yourself during the stay, and details of where you are staying. Carrying these documents neatly ensures a smooth, quick entry.
Documents to carry
Even though the process is relaxed, arriving prepared makes all the difference at immigration. Keep these ready in both printed and digital form.
- A passport valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry, with blank pages for stamps
- A confirmed return or onward air ticket out of Thailand
- Proof of funds, commonly cited as around 20,000 THB per person (or 40,000 THB per family), though this is rarely checked when other documents are in order
- Hotel booking confirmation or the address where you will be staying
- A completed Thailand Digital Arrival Card, which travellers are expected to submit online before arrival
Your 60-day stay and extensions
Under the current visa exemption, Indian tourists can stay up to 60 days on a single entry. That is generous for a leisure trip and lets you comfortably combine Bangkok's markets, the northern hills of Chiang Mai, and the southern islands in one holiday.
If you want to linger longer, you can typically apply for a 30-day extension at a local Thai immigration office for a small fee. Because immigration rules and permitted stay lengths can change, always reconfirm the current limit before you travel, and never overstay your stamp, as overstaying carries fines and future entry problems.
When you still need a visa
The exemption is only for tourism and short social visits. You will need to apply for the appropriate Thai visa in advance if your trip falls outside that scope.
- You plan to work, take up employment, or run a business in Thailand
- You are travelling for long-term study or a course of several months
- You intend to stay well beyond what the exemption plus extension allows
- You are visiting for certain business, volunteer or specialised purposes
